e-Shram card for women workers: eligibility, registration and what it does
Check who may register on e-Shram, complete a free self or assisted registration, keep the occupation record current and understand why the card alone is not a cash benefit or guarantee of scheme eligibility.

What e-Shram is and who it is meant to include
e-Shram is the Ministry of Labour and Employment’s national database for unorganised workers. It includes workers such as domestic workers, agricultural workers, migrants, home-based workers, street vendors and gig or platform workers. Registration can make a worker’s information available for scheme navigation; it does not by itself award money.
Check the age and worker conditions
The current portal says a worker aged 16 or older may register if she is engaged in unorganised work and meets the applicable exclusions, including not being an EPFO or ESIC member or a government employee. The FAQ also says an income-tax payer is not eligible. Check the live rules for your work and coverage status.
A wide range of women’s work can count
The portal’s examples include wage workers, self-employed and home-based workers, agriculture, domestic work, construction, street vending, migrant work and platform work. If a job title is not listed, describe the actual work and ask the official helpdesk or a Common Service Centre (CSC) how to classify it.
Do not confuse the worker database with an employer benefit
An e-Shram card does not replace an employment contract, wage records, a construction-worker board registration or an application to a particular pension, insurance or health scheme. Each program has its own eligibility and decision process.

Register online or get help in person
The official portal allows self-registration and assisted registration. Registration is free through the portal; use the published CSC service terms if you need biometric help.
Prepare Aadhaar and an Aadhaar-linked mobile
The current FAQ lists an Aadhaar number and linked mobile number. If you do not have access to a linked phone, it says to visit a CSC or State Seva Kendra for biometric registration. Ask for privacy while entering details if someone monitors your phone or documents.
Use the official e-Shram site or a listed CSC
Go to eshram.gov.in and choose the registration option, or use the portal’s CSC locator for assisted registration. The Ministry says registration is free and warns workers not to pay a registration agent. Keep the UAN and card after submission.
Review the occupation and contact details
Enter the work type, current address, education and skills accurately. The portal says workers can later update relevant details. Save the acknowledgement and check the card before leaving the registration centre.
Keep the record updated and protect your credentials
A current occupation and contact record can help the government identify and connect workers with relevant services. Keep control of your login and check how your information will be used.
Update work, address or phone changes
The portal encourages workers to update their profile and occupation. Use the official site or CSC and keep the update acknowledgement. Ask for assistance if a mobile number change blocks your access.
The card does not ordinarily expire, but details should stay current
The FAQ says there is no renewal requirement and the e-Shram card does not expire. Updating your profile may still be necessary for continued scheme navigation or to reflect a new occupation.
Do not share OTPs or pay for a promised payout
Registration is free. No agent can guarantee a benefit by collecting an OTP, bank PIN or remote-access code. Use the official helpdesk or grievance route if a profile is changed without your permission or an intermediary demands money.
What e-Shram registration can and cannot provide
The portal is designed to connect worker records with government services and schemes. A card is an identity record for this system, not a promise that a payment or service is approved.
Check each listed scheme separately
The e-Shram site links to social-security and welfare schemes and describes a one-stop route to discover services. For each program, check age, income, contribution, location, documents and application status. Do not assume that registering creates automatic coverage.
Ask about the grievance and support route
The current FAQ lists the national helpdesk numbers 14434 and 1800-889-6811 and directs workers to the official grievance portal. Confirm the current phone number on the live site before calling and keep your UAN private unless the official process asks for it.
Keep work evidence outside the card
Maintain wage messages, hours, payment records, contractor details, social-security numbers and complaint receipts where safe. e-Shram does not decide unpaid wages or replace the authority responsible for a separate employment claim.
Questions women workers ask about e-Shram
Will I receive money as soon as I register?
No. The card itself is a worker record, not a cash payment. The portal links to separate schemes, each with its own eligibility and application; do not plan household spending around a payment that has not been approved.
Can a domestic, migrant or platform worker register?
These groups are included among the portal’s worker categories, subject to the current general eligibility and coverage conditions.
What if I do not have a smartphone?
The official FAQ describes assisted registration at a CSC or State Seva Kendra, including biometric authentication if there is no Aadhaar-linked mobile.
Do I need to renew the card every year?
The current FAQ says the card does not expire and does not require renewal, although keeping profile details up to date is recommended.
