Changing your name on documents after marriage in India: Aadhaar, PAN and passport

A practical, document-by-document checklist for women who choose to update their name after marriage or divorce, with official routes and a reminder that marriage does not require a surname change.

In this guide

You can choose whether to update your name

Marriage does not make a woman’s surname change compulsory. You may keep your existing name, change a surname, use a combined name or decide not to update any document. If you do choose an update, each authority has its own process.

Decide what change you actually want

Write the exact spelling and order of names you plan to use. A surname-only update may follow a different process from changing a first name or the full name. You can make a gradual decision and do not have to update every record at once.

Do not let family pressure become an application requirement

Ask an office to point to its current written rule if someone claims your spouse’s name or approval is required. Passport Seva says no additional document is required for a woman’s surname change on account of marriage or divorce, while a full name change follows the applicable standard process.

Update Aadhaar through UIDAI’s current process

UIDAI accepts only the documents and channels in its current update rules. Check the live list before visiting a centre or sending records, especially if you have already used the permitted name-update requests.

Check which identity proof matches the change

UIDAI’s document list includes rules for name updates and marriage-related name or date-of-birth cases. Select a proof that supports the exact name you are requesting. A marriage certificate that shows both names may help in some situations; confirm the current accepted-document list for your case.

Use an authorised update centre or live UIDAI channel

Follow UIDAI’s current directions for the type of information you are changing. Ask for the Enrolment ID or Update Request Number and keep it until the request is completed. Never share your Aadhaar OTP, biometric access or portal password with an agent who promises approval.

Ask about exception handling if you have reached an update limit

UIDAI’s FAQ describes a separate process when the name-update limit has been used. Read the current exception instructions and contact UIDAI through its official help route rather than paying an unofficial agent or mailing sensitive records to an unverified address.

Update PAN and passport separately

One record does not automatically update another. Before applying, compare the spelling, initials and order you plan to use, then follow the official service for each document.

Apply to update PAN through an authorised service provider

The Income Tax Department directs users to Protean or UTIITSL for PAN name corrections. Use the current correction form and document list on the provider’s official site. If PAN and Aadhaar names differ, the Department says linking may fail until the records are aligned.

Check Passport Seva’s rule for surname versus full-name changes

The current Passport Seva FAQ says a woman changing only her surname due to marriage or divorce needs no additional document for that reason. If you are changing the full name or another personal detail, use the current Document Advisor and re-issue instructions; requirements can differ by case.

Keep appointment receipts and the returned old document

Save the application number, submitted proof, fee receipt and delivery record. If an office rejects the request, ask for the reason and correction route in writing. Keep old identity evidence where a future bank, school or travel check may ask how the names connect.

Plan the order for banks, work, education and other records

There is no single government sequence that updates every record. Prioritise the documents needed for an upcoming transaction and use each institution’s official procedure.

List records that use the old name

Check bank accounts, tax profiles, provident fund, insurance, voter registration, employer payroll, education certificates and property records. Ask each institution whether an update is required for the service you need or whether proof linking both names is enough.

Protect account access while requests are pending

Keep control of your registered phone number, email, bank login and application references. Use a private contact method if someone else monitors your accounts, and do not ask another person to share an OTP or change a record on your behalf without your consent.

Correct an error before repeating the same application

If the update is rejected because of a spelling or proof mismatch, compare the exact submitted name with the document and ask the authority what correction it needs. Avoid duplicate applications unless the official service tells you to reapply.

Questions about changing documents after marriage or divorce

Can I update my passport without changing Aadhaar first?

Passport Seva assesses its own application and documents. Check the current Document Advisor for your exact request; do not assume one identity document automatically controls all the others.

What if my PAN and Aadhaar have different spellings?

Check the Income Tax Department’s PAN-Aadhaar guidance and update the relevant record through its official provider. Keep a copy of the proof and application reference in case linking needs another attempt.
