PMFBY crop insurance for women farmers: eligibility, documents and claims

Find out whether a crop and location are notified, what women cultivators, tenants and sharecroppers may need to prove, how to enrol before the season deadline and how to report a loss.

In this guide

Start with the crop, area and season notification

Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) is crop and season specific. A farmer should confirm the current State notification before paying a premium or assuming a loss is covered.

Confirm that the crop and insurance unit are notified

The official portal's current notification identifies the eligible crop, area, season, insurer, sum insured and farmer premium. A crop being grown nearby or covered last year does not prove it is covered in this village or season.

Women cultivators, tenants and sharecroppers

The scheme's operational guidance includes eligible tenant and sharecropper cultivators, but the State notification sets the accepted evidence. Being a woman or doing farm work does not automatically create a policy.

Ask what proves an insurable interest

The guidelines provide for land records and, for tenants or sharecroppers, the contract, agreement or other evidence permitted by the State. Ask the local agriculture office which documents are accepted for this season before the deadline.

Apply and verify the policy before a loss occurs

Eligible non-loanee farmers can use the official online service or an authorised bank, PACS, CSC or insurer channel. Farmers with crop loans should check what their bank has recorded.

Check what a crop loan has—and has not—done

If a KCC or seasonal crop loan is involved, ask the bank whether insurance was recorded for the right crop, area and season, and request the policy or application reference. Do not assume that a loan entry proves the correct cover was issued.

Report crop damage and follow a claim

A claim depends on the insured event, notification, loss assessment and policy rules. Report promptly and retain a record; coverage does not mean every loss will produce an automatic payment.

Track assessment and payment separately

Check the portal's application and claim status, ask who is responsible for the next assessment step and use the grievance route if information conflicts. A delay, rejection or assessment question should be raised with the insurer and State nodal department using the policy number.
