The problem is access, not aptitude

Women and girls are capable of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Participation changes when opportunity, safety, money, belonging and time are unequal.

Stereotypes shape who is encouraged

Calling maths, coding, laboratories or leadership ‘for boys’ can change subject choice and confidence before a student has tried the work. Praise curiosity and persistence, not a fixed genius label.

Representation affects belonging

A girl who sees few women teachers, engineers or principal investigators may read absence as a message about who belongs. Role models should be diverse and reachable.

A pipeline number hides experiences

Count entry, completion, pay, promotion, grants, patents, leadership and exits by gender and other relevant identities. A high enrolment figure does not prove equality.

Subject choice is policed

A family may fund a son’s coaching, device or hostel while asking a daughter to choose a ‘safer’ or shorter course. Information and resources should not be allocated by gender.

The classroom is not neutral

Interruptions, sexist jokes, lower expectations, inaccessible equipment and credit-taking can make a student withdraw even when grades are strong.

Care breaks are treated as failure

Pregnancy, elder care, illness or relocation can interrupt a career. A fair system restores access to labs, funding, supervision and promotion instead of treating the person as permanently behind.

Safety affects field and lab work

Travel, late hours, housing, harassment and reporting routes matter. ‘Be careful’ is not a substitute for an institution’s duty to prevent and respond to abuse.

Informal networks decide formal outcomes

Recommendations, conference invitations, authorship, patents and high-value projects can flow through networks that exclude women. Make criteria and credit visible.

Choices for students and researchers

A person cannot fix a biased system alone, but a clear plan can protect options and connect her to support.

Ask how the pathway works

Before enrolling or accepting a role, ask about fees, equipment, accommodation, travel, supervision, leave, complaint contacts, accessibility and what happens after a career break.

Build more than one mentor route

A teacher, women’s network, professional society, disability group or former student can offer information without becoming the only gatekeeper.

Keep a contribution record

Save project roles, data, code, lab notes, presentations, publications, patents, feedback and dates. Keep copies safely when authorship or credit may be disputed.

Plan for care without apologising

Ask for predictable flexibility, childcare, leave, remote work or a re-entry route where available. Care is a social need, not evidence that a woman is less serious.

Use the complaint route when needed

Harassment, discrimination, retaliation and unsafe work can require a committee, ombudsperson, union or legal-aid route. Ask about confidentiality and interim measures.

What institutions and families can change

India has programmes aimed at girls and women in science and technology; implementation should be transparent, accessible and measured by outcomes.

Fund entry and re-entry

Scholarships, fellowships, devices, transport, safe housing, childcare and return-to-research support can keep talent connected. The Department of Science and Technology lists women-focused schemes and re-entry opportunities.

Make selection criteria clear

Publish eligibility, scoring, pay, authorship, promotion and grant decisions. Audit who applies, is shortlisted, receives support and leaves.

Build safe, accessible facilities

Provide lighting, toilets, equipment, disability access, reporting channels and trained staff. Safety should not mean excluding women from fieldwork or laboratories.

Share care across the household

Families can share cooking, transport, elder care and finances. Do not treat a girl’s education as optional when a son’s is protected.

Track power, not only headcount

Measure leadership, decision-making, pay, credit, patents, research time and retention. Publish changes and invite women to review whether they work.
